Over the past 1.5 years, only 90 electric cars of the only certified model Mitsubishi i-MiEV have been sold in Russia. The majority of these cars have been purchased under the corporate orders of electrical grid companies testing special charging plants and security firms that need low-noise cars for surveillance purposes. As compared to Europe and the US, the volume of electric car sold in Russia remains trifling. According to experts, the main factors are absence of developed infrastructure of charging plants, climate conditions, and high duties.
Development of electric cars in Russia is carried out by AvtoVaz. In August 2012, the plant agreed with the authorities of StavropolTerritory on supplying electric cars El Lada designed on the basis of LadaKalina. At the first stage, StavropolTerritory will be supplied with 100 cars that will be used as cabs in the Caucasian Mineral Waters region. Yesterday, AvtoVaz external relations director Igor Burenkov stated that deliveries will start in January. “The AvtoVaz long-term program on electric cars supply is adapted to specific orders, since the consumer market for this product in Russia is not yet fully developed,” said Mr. Burenkov.
