As of 2018, there are few active AI projects, which may be applied in arctic conditions. It is mentioned in analytical survey "Application of AI Systems in the Situation of a New Stage of Arctic Development". The report was prepared by the Coordinating Committee for Development of Northern Territories and Arctic of the Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs and the Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs of Arctic Circle. The authors of the survey are convinced that, in general, the interest towards technologies will grow – both on the part of the Government and on the part of business.
"AI applications become a reality, and ahead of other regions in Russia, it may be implemented in the Arctic and the Northern Sea Route area. For geological prospecting in the Arctic shelf sea, the appearance of devices operating without human involvement means a better effectiveness, an increased security and in the long run reduction of costs for core operations," the survey reports.
Already now, business takes a keen interest in unmanned technologies with the perspective of their use in remote areas with extreme climate conditions, says Maxim Zverkov, Managing Director of ABAGY Robotic Systems. Personnel is a really sensitive issue in these regions: it's hard to find the necessary professionals, and monitoring of their work also requires considerable resources.
"The use of robots in such conditions looks absolutely logical. At the same time, requirements to them are very high. In order to work on remote facilities, the robots must be extremely adaptive, easily managed and controlled from a center, become 'the hands' of the head office personnel, correctly fulfill all the tasks and require a minimal human participation in its working process. This type of solution is in high demand, and we have things to offer,"

AI technologies are applied at oil, gas and condensate fields of the Extreme North. At ООО Gasprom Dobycha Yamburg (the Yamalo-Nenetsky AO), digital projects aim at improvement of production effectiveness: they intend to build the hybrid intellectual systems for their gas field facilities and introduce new management systems on the basis of fuzzy logics and mathematics.
"The elements of artificial intelligence are introduced in the company in order to increase the reliability of technological processes. We use the capabilities of intellectual management systems in case of getting some fuzzy information, for example, in case of measuring channels failure. The found solutions are patented as inventions and implemented in production,"
said Anatoly Arabskiy, D-ty Chief Engineer for R&D and Environment at ООО Gasprom Dobycha Yamburg.
At ООО Gasprom Dobycha Yamburg, they have invented and implemented a smart system in order to avoid a typical problem for gas recovery companies. In flowlines, the manufacturers need to avoid formation of hydrates — solid compounds of natural gas and water. The hydrates are being accumulated in wellbores, on the walls of main and field pipelines, thus reducing their discharge capacity. In order to reduce these formations, the gaswork engineers use methanol. The problem relates to its discharged volume: the excess expenditure of methyl alcohol increases the load on environment and unreasonable company costs. Saving methanol is not good either, as it may cause an emergency at a pipeline.
To solve the problem, the engineers of ООО Gasprom Dobycha Yamburg have developed an intellectual automated technological processes management system. The system is operated on the basis of special technology, which helped to achieve AI effect.

"The main idea of the technology is that methanol is discharged to a flowline only in the necessary amounts and only when a process of hydrate formation begins. For this, the course of real processes is controlled together with their parallel modelling," reported the company experts.
Due to smart technologies, the company saves annually over 4 mln rubles on methanol.

It may be possible to apply Artificial Intellect in floating nuclear power stations, the authors of the analytical survey remark. It is supposed that small reactors may be placed at icebreakers and supply energy to oil and gas recovering companies at remote territories as well as to prospecting enterprises and shelf platforms.
"At them [floating NPS], AI will be applied in the automated control systems for technological processes," specify the experts.
A project of the first floating nuclear heating and electricity power station (FNPS) is being implemented by Rosenergoatom. Its capacity will be 70 MW; the station has been designed with a big operation margin in order to provide the environmental safety of nuclear reactors in case of tsunami or other natural disasters. The first FNPS is called in honor of Academician Lomonosov.
"It is the first sample of medium powered nuclear energy mobile sources, the demand for which is going to be rather high according to our forecasts. A big interest to such competence is demonstrated by all island nations, where, due to certain reasons, it is not possible to create a powerful infrastructure of electricity transmission,"
told Alexey Likhachev, Director General of Rosatom.
In 2016, the mooring trials of "Academician Likhachev" began, in the spring of 2018, the power unit was towed from St.Petersburg to Murmansk, where in summer, the first nuclear fuel loading took place. It is expected that in 2019, the station will be transported to the sea port of Pevek, the floating NPS will provide energy to the Chukotsky Autonomous Okrug. If the power unit proves to be good, Russia plans to start a serial production.

AI is also required for environmental projects in the Arctic, according to the authors of the analytical survey: smart technologies will help modelling the warming consequences, making forecasts of possible damage to environment and economy.
"It's hard to make a precise forecast of how the Far North and its population will cope with climate change, whether they will be able to settle the conflict of interests of mining companies and environment, indigenous people and biosphere in general. The new technologies, monitoring and forecasting will possibly help to avoid the crisis and make a human being not a temporary user but an adequate host of the Arctic," resume the authors of the analytical survey.
