Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev laid the first stone in the foundation of the Volkswagen (VW) first engine plant in the Russian Federation.
Opening the ceremony, the head of the Russian Government stated that this is a big event not only for VW but for the whole city of Kaluga and Kaluga Region. “Of great importance is the fact that our cooperation is gaining momentum,” emphasized Dmitry Medvedev, reminding that the first plant of the German automaker was built in Russia five years ago, and since 2009 the full-cycle production has been in operation.
The new engine plant will be built in an area of 30 thou sq m in the vicinity of the auto building plant of VW in Kaluga. The planned annual production volume will amount to 150K engines. The plant is set to start operations in the beginning of 2015.
