SADC countries interested in attracting Urals innovations

16 July 2011

On 15 July, Sverdlovsk Region Governor Alexander Misharin held a meeting within the framework of the Innoprom Forum with a joint delegation of Southern African SADC countries: Angola, Democratic Republic of Congo, Zambia and Namibia, who had come to Sverdlovsk Region at his invitation.

The head of the delegation, Republic of Congo Industry Minister Mr. Kuzunda, expressed his appreciation for the splendid organization of expo events, and thanked regional officials and residents for the warm welcome extended to Forum participants. He also indicated that the delegation of African countries had already been working in Ekaterinburg for a number of days. In that time, meetings had been held at the Chamber of Commerce and Urals Federal University. Delegation members had also held talks at instrument-making and optical-mechanics plants, Automobiles and Motors of the Urals (AMUR), and the Civil Aviation Plant.

Mr. Kuzunda noted the keen interest of the aforementioned countries in strengthening cooperation with Russia and such an industrially-developed region as Sverdlovsk. This is linked, first and foremost, to the drive to attract Urals technology and equipment to the markets of Southern Africa. Said ambition also applies to mineral extraction and processing, metallurgy, transport machine-building, construction, agriculture, and energy. The reconstruction of hydroelectric power plants is a matter of particular interest.

We can find common interests with respect to all of the aforementioned areas, said Alexander Misharin. As a well-established industrial area, the Central Urals, for example, possesses the full-range of raw-material processing technology – from extraction to finished product – which is of such concern to Africa today. We are also prepared to offer cooperation in such areas as education, pharmacology, and medicine.

The governor suggested organizing a business-delegation exchange in order to hammer out the details of how best to coordinate future cooperation. Alexander Misharin wished the Southern African delegation success, and expressed confidence that the two sides would be in a position to discuss an interim status report on cooperation progress at the next Innoprom expo.
